The Right Kind of Unlikely
We were both invited to a party by our different friend groups. Phil from his close friends he’s known for years and Rebecca by her best friends. It was a birthday, and also a football game, and neither of us cares about football but went to enjoy the day with our friends. Phil wasn’t feeling well and almost didn’t show and Rebecca was sick on the day but decided to stay. We had been quietly noticing each other all afternoon and saying nothing. Him being afraid of rejection and her not sure if he’d be interested.
Rebecca was sitting outside with friends when Phil went outside to cool off under the misters, in what he still insists was the least flattering way possible, and she said, “Trying to get cool?”
They started talking and he made a bad joke. She lost interest but continued to converse with him. As they were talking, she stopped and said, “You probably aren’t interested in my story but I’ll tell you anyway…” In that moment, Phil paused, turned his entire body toward her, gave her a look that said he was indeed very interested, and listened. It was five hours later of us talking, when the stars came out. As they were leaving she thanked him for such great conversation and he asked her for her number. We have been talking and getting closer every day and it’s like we’ve known each other for lifetimes.
Looking back, what makes that evening feel even more serendipitous is how briefly our two circles happened to overlap. It was one of those rare moments when the right people, the right place, and the right timing all came together, giving us the chance to meet, connect, and fall deeply in love.
These synchronistic circumstances became the inspiration for our wedding rings. Each contains meteorite, a piece of rock that traveled through space for billions of years, survived its fall to Earth, and against all odds, was found. It felt like the right order of unlikely.
The two of us come from very different worlds, and so do the people in them. Our friends and families have never been in one place at once with different circles, different corners of our lives, most of them strangers to each other. That is part of what makes this evening so meaningful. Every one of you shaped one of us into someone the other could meet under those misters, connect, and fall in love. Bringing all of you into the same room feels like the proper way to start our lives together.
So please do us the honor and join us for a celestial evening among the barrels. Starlight, food, music, laughter and everyone we love in one room who is meaningful to our story.
